Legal Advice for Road Traffic Accidents in London

The Department for Transport reported that 24,430 people were killed or seriously injured in road accidents in the year ending September 2011. It's a grim fact that statistically, you are more likely to have an accident in London than any other place in the UK. However, you need not let this put you off living in one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in the world, you just need to make sure that if you have an accident, you know how to deal with it. Below we have listed tips on getting legal advice after a road accident.

Report Your Accident to the Police

Once the ordeal is over, you must report your accident to the police however small it may be. This will help you further down the line in terms of insurance, and it's also your duty as a responsible citizen. The report made to the police, needs to be made in person and a simple phone call will not be sufficient. Also, the report will have to be made within the stipulated 24 hour period or as soon as reasonably practicable after the incident.

Seek Witnesses

If, after your accident you are well enough to communicate, then make sure you ask people that witnessed the accident to leave their contact details. You are going to need to call on these people later when you start legal proceedings, so don't let them get away.

Finding the Right Solicitor

As you can imagine, there are an enormous number of solicitors in London, so it's very important to find the correct one. You can find details of solicitors on the Law Society website at: www.solicitors-online.com, or visit to the Ministry of Justice website at www.justice.gov.uk. A local advice agency such as a law centre or Citizens Advice Bureau should also be able to recommend local solicitors who are experienced in the appropriate area of law.

Pursue Your Claim

Unfortunately, as well as dealing with the accident, you need to make sure that you are tenacious in following up you claim. Some, not all, solicitors can be slow at responding due to a heavy workload. So make sure you stay on top of all communication, in order to claim the maximum amount that is due to you.

Talk to Family

Your legal battle may not be the smoothest ride you will ever take, so make sure you get the support that you need from family and friends.
